When is Orange Shirt Day 2023? What is Orange Shirt day?

Orange Shirt Day (observed annually on September 30th) is a day to remember and raise awareness of the harm caused by Residential schools and the ongoing impact it has on Indigenous families, communities and cultures. The movement was inspired by the story of Phyllis Webstad, a former residential school student who had her brand new bright orange shirt taken from her on her first day of school in 1973. The orange shirt symbolizes the loss of Indigenous culture and identity that occurred in residential schools. https://resistclothing.ca/blogs/news/what-is-orange-shirt-day-when-is-orange-shirt-day-2023

Counter-culture and the #LANDBACK movement

The origins of counter culture can be traced back to the 1950s and 60s, when young people began to reject the conservative values of their parents and embrace more progressive ideas. However, Indigenous people have been demonstrating against colonialism since contact. https://resistclothing.ca/blogs/news/counter-culture-and-the-landback-movement

The Importance of Authentic Indigenous Businesses

Indigenous art and culture hold a significant place in history and heritage. However, non-Indigenous individuals and businesses often steal Indigenous cultural resources and sell them as their own, exploiting Indigenous artists and communities. This also perpetuates negative stereotypes and detracts from the importance of Indigenous art and culture. https://resistclothing.ca/blogs/news/the-importance-of-authentic-indigenous-businesses-vendor-list
